Guidelines
Used for Membership
Committee

The bylaws state that the Membership Committee shall consist of the Vice President for Membership as Chair, one member of the Executive Committee, and at least three others chosen from the general membership.

During the year, letters that come to the Vice President for Membership proposing and seconding new member candidates will be filed until such time as the Membership Committee can meet. Upon receipt of the applications, the Vice President for Membership will send acknowledgements.

The following guidelines apply to the Membership Committee:

  1. Four out of five members of the committee must approve a candidate for her name to be sent to the Executive Committee.
  2. Nine of the eleven Executive Committee members must approve candidates for membership.
  3. Members must be on the Board for at least two years before proposing a candidate.
  4. A member can only propose one candidate and second two candidates between one Annual Meeting and the next.
  5. A member may not propose or second a candidate who is a relative or relative by marriage to her.

The following criteria should be kept in mind as the Committee makes its recommendations:

  1. The number of women to be elected to membership as indicated by the Executive Committee
  2. Alumna or non-alumna
  3. Past education
  4. Residential location
  5. General age category
  6. Donor prospects
  7. Social and business position in the community
  8. Potential for adding diversity to the Board

The candidates approved by the Membership Committee will then be submitted to the Executive Committee for approval, and will be taken into membership only prior to the Annual Meeting.

After approval by the Executive Committee, the candidate’s proposer and seconder will be notified of the decision of the committee. The proposer should then make a personal phone call to extend the invitation of membership. A formal invitation of membership from the President will then follow in the mail. A letter of explanation from the Vice President for Membership will then be sent to every proposer and seconder whose candidate was not invited into membership.
