Meeting, Program, Tour, and Luncheon with Sophia Siskel (KSM99), President of the Chicago Botanic Garden and Nyree Zerega, Director of the Masters Program in Plant Biology and Conservation

In response to a need for plant biologists, Northwestern University teamed up with the Chicago Botanic Garden three years ago to offer the nation's first master's degree in plant biology and conservation. Sophia Siskel (KSM99), President of the Chicago Botanic Garden, along with Nyree Zerega, Director of the Masters Program in Plant Biology and Conservation, addressed Women’s Board participants about this exciting interdisciplinary program, designed to prepare students for leadership positions in fields of botanical science and plant conservation. A behind-the-scenes tour of the science labs at the Garden was also a part of the afternoon’s events.

Lecture and Breakfast Reception with Andrew Koppelman, John Paul Stevens Professor of Law, Northwestern University

How do religious beliefs and morality shape our laws and political discourse? Professor Andrew Koppelman addressed these issues in a thought-provoking presentation and discussion with Women’s Board participants. Koppelman is an expert in constitutional law and political philosophy, as well as a researcher of paternalism and perfectionism in the law.

Lecture and Cocktail Reception with John Lavine, Dean of the Medill School

The information age has radically changed the way the public seeks out, receives, and interprets the news. Dean Lavine presented Women’s Board participants with an insightful lecture on how Medill is better preparing students to meet 21st century challenges, including the establishment of Northwestern’s new journalism and communications programs in Doha, Qatar.

Lecture on Bioethics and Luncheon with Laurie Zoloth, Professor of Medical Humanities and Bioethics; Religion Director of the Center for Bioethics, Science and Society

With new discoveries in genetic testing, ethical questions arise that intrigue medical professionals and scientists as to how to proceed in their fields. Should insurance companies having access to genetic testing results to determine coverage? Just because we can preliminarily alter genetic code, should we? Women’s Board participants engaged in a bioethical discussion with Professor Zoloth.

Tour and Luncheon at Argonne National Laboratory

A tour of the facilities at Argonne National Laboratory highlighted the collaboration between the Lab and the University. The tour included a look into the Advanced Photon Source area, a presentation/demonstration about engineers working with doctors, and a review of climate activities at Argonne. Following the tour, Scientific User Facilities representative, Dennis Mills, gave a lecture during an afternoon luncheon. Following lunch, tours in the Transportation Research and Optimization Technology areas were also given.
